overweight america?

i noticed an interesting trend today while walking from the redline (subway) in LA to the metrolink train after work. everyone that gets off the subway with me are usually in a rush to make it to their train on time. they hurry around me to try to beat out the people next to them. walking from underground to the trains, there are two sets of stairs and an escalator. as hurried as these people were, most of them were crammed onto the up escalator when the stairs were people-free and most likely, much faster than trying to maneuver the hordes of people stopped on the escalator. seeing this got me thinking about how much we hear about america becoming overweight and how experts are worried about the young people and obesity. there's always those stories of people suing fast food companies because they (the people) have become overweight and instead of pointing the blame at themselves (as they should) they point the finger towards the food industry. america is in denial about why we are so much more overweight than any other civilized country. it's because we don't give a damn about working out or making an effort to forgo the escalators/elevators for the stairs.
i work in a tall building in downtown LA. everyday i take the metrolink to union station, WALK downstairs to the subway and then WALK up the hill to my office. once there, i, unfortunately, am forced to take the elevator because i work on the 17th floor and there are no stairs from the main plaza level to the rest of the floors. however, i make a conscious effort to walk up and down the stairs between floors rather than take the elevators because 1) it's usually faster than waiting for an elevator to make it through all it's stops and 2) I'M GETTING EXERCISE.
although i know i don't feel like it makes much of a difference when i look at my body, i know it's better to do that than to be lazy and take the elevator to get me to one floor higher or lower from where i am. (i HATE people that do that. one of my biggest pet peeves of the summer)
NOTE TO AMERICA: stop blaming other people for your lack of motivation/your weight/your obesity/your PROBLEMS. take into account the things you do each day to give yourself exercise and MAYBE, just maybe, we'll be able to solve this obesity problem.
